According to the bible, and other reliable historical accounts of the time, on a Friday around this time of year, nearly 2000 years ago, Jesus of Nazareth was falsely accused, convicted and sentenced to death in a sham trial, then tortured, abused, and killed by crucifixion.

It's difficult to see what is 'good' about this. We however, think that it's a VERY good Friday. And here's why.......

Christians believe that Jesus of Nazareth wasn’t just an ordinary person suffering a terrible injustice and a cruel death. Christians believe it is far worse, and far better, than that.

Christianity claims that on this day the creator God himself, in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, the only truly innocent person who’s ever lived, was murdered by an evil regime. Deicide. God-murdering. There is nothing more horrific than this.

Yet the bible says that in this act of ultimate horror, God was not a passive victim. Rather, God was allowing human evil to do its worst to Him so that He could defeat it on behalf of all humanity.

Christians believe what makes Good Friday good was that on this day God was suffering and dying in the place of humanity, simultaneously absorbing in his own Being the consequences of human evil, and by so doing, defeating that very evil.

This is good news because it means that it is possible for us to be freely, and completely, forgiven for all our evil, all our stuff ups. To be forgiven not just for what we’ve done wrong, but even for the good which we have failed to do.

And it means that each of us can be reconciled to our creator. We can know God personally, intimately, as a loving Heavenly Father who embraces us into His family. We know the presence of God in our lives, and therefore can live lives full of truth, and justice, and beauty. And we can know that death itself is defeated and we can follow Jesus through the grave and into His resurrection.
